Recognising it
Persistent fear of social situations, anticipatory dread before events, post-event rumination, and avoidance that interferes with work, study or relationships. Physical symptoms include blushing, trembling, sweating and a racing heart.
Treatment
CBT — especially with graded exposure and video feedback — is first-line per NICE and APA. SSRIs (such as sertraline, paroxetine) are an effective medication option. Beta-blockers are used short-term for situational performance anxiety, not as ongoing treatment.
Self-help that works
Drop safety behaviours (over-rehearsing, avoiding eye contact). Shift attention outward rather than monitoring yourself. Approach feared situations in small, repeated steps rather than rare big leaps.
